Josephine's Locket
Detail
Free-motion machine embroidery. Thread, photo transfer, sheer and metallic fabrics. (18" x 36") 2008.
Josephine's Locket is based on the locket my mother wore, in which she had placed tiny photographs of herself and my father. She had my dad's picture cut out in the shape of a heart. I found that particularly touching, a sign of the loving feelings that she had trouble expressing outwardly. My siblings and I didn't discover the contents of the locket until after her death in 2006. I included some of her perfume bottles to complete the double portrait.
This piece was included in the from WOMAN II exhibit at the Lakeland Community College Art Gallery in Kirtland, OH, March 9 - April 3, 2009.
